Athens, Georgia – Today’s weather is crisp, cold with bright sunny skies. For me, the perfect elements for an enjoyable winter day. No complaints here.

I pulled out a few records and a compact disc for housecleaning: the deep scrubbing edition. Jody Watley’s solo debut and Sylvester’s Step II are old faves. I thoroughly snatch dirt from cracks, crevices and baseboards with up-tempo dance music. Donna Summer’s double album, On the Radio, is another album that aids me during Saturday cleaning. The Young and Peterson album is romantic, straight ahead jazz. It swings and you don’t need to be to mathematical when listening to it. Matana Roberts’ Coin Coin: Chapter One was given to me as a Christmas present from MWF. Roberts, a multi-talented saxophonist, is doing that free jazz thing with a brain, heart, humor and soul. This one caught me by surprise as I’d never heard of her. Thoroughly enjoyable. New fan.

Three Hundred Sixty-Five

Three hundred sixty-five. The number of records I am hoping to amass in the next three years and leave it at that. I honestly do not feel the need to own every slice of licorice pizza ever made. Currently my re-booted record collection is at seventy-one discs [three 45s, nine 12 inch singles, fifty-nine full length albums]. A mixture of new and vintage pressings. I am not so much of a snob that I will turn down 180 gram but I would like to avoid it.

I am working on rebuilding classic Disco I once owned. I am adding plenty of  genres I truly dig: Experimental, Free Jazz, Soul, Primitive Rock, Psychedelic Rock, Art Rock, Jazz, Glam Rock, Outsider stuff and titles I once owned or always wanted.

As someone open to suggestions [especially from fellow music lovers], with this project I am doing the heavy lifting myself and sourcing new sounds via YouTube, Soundcloud, Aquarium Drunkard and Bandcamp. Collecting vinyl is an expensive hobby and I am working within tight financial restraints. Here is where the challenge lies. Add to this, I am still searching for a cost effective, quality turntable.

[Slaps hands together] I am going to make this happen.
