Athens, Georgia – Remembering Elvis’s passing on this day. Illustrating it with the scanned front page of the Los Angeles Times. I was primary school-aged at the time of his death. His movies seemed to play in heavy rotation on channel 5 [K-TLA], channel 9 [KHJ] and channel 11 [K-TTV]. My parents were not fans of his, so they did not understand my fervor to watch his films or him “shake around” [which is understandable].
It rained heavily all day, the day his death was announced. Growing up in Southern California, it was rather odd for it to rain, and so profusely, in the middle of August [Let alone during the summer months].
I will never forget my small hands pushing back the heavily weighted drapes, watching millions of raindrops falling from the sky and into our swimming pool. The nightly news playing on the massive television in the living room. Raindrops turning into diamonds.
